Hyperkalemia and Nausea in Renal Failure

Hyperkalemia and nause are commonly seen complications of Renal Failure. So, why patients suffer from these problems and how to deal with them?
Hyperkalemia
Hyperkalemia is a condition in which the potassium level in blood is very high. The healthy kidneys can maintain levels of potassium in blood. However, in Renal Failure, the potassium can not be excreted effectively thus resulting in high level in blood. As potassium helps heart and other muscle and never cells function properly. If its level is too high in blood, the patients are at high risk of developing heart failure.
The patients can take the following measures to reduce the incidence of hyperkalemia effectively.
1. Avoid eating foods rich in high potassium such as bananas, lentils, nuts, peaches, potatoes, tomatoes, watermelon.
2. If the urine output does not decline, the patients should drink more water. Dehydration can make hyperkalemia worse.
3. Avoid using blanked blood. If blood has been preserved for more than one week, the serum potassium can reach 16 mmol/L.
Nausea
Nausea is a manifestation of digestive system disturbance in Renal Failure. It is particularly severe in the morning.
As kidneys are damaged, a lot of urea nitrogen will build up in blood. Afterwards, the urea in intestinal tract will be decomposed into ammonia. As a result, the ammonia will irritate interstitial tract thus causing in nausea. As the body may lose much moisture at night, it will cause increased blood concentration so the urea nitrogen level is relatively high at night. That is why the nausea is particularly severe in the morning.
To relieve nausea in Renal Failure, if the patients do not have swelling, reduced urination, they should have more water in the morning. It can dilute blood concentration and lower the urea nitrogen level relatively. Therefore, it will be able to relieve the symptom effectively.
Besides the above two problems, many patients with Renal Failure may suffer from heart failure, anemia etc. If you want to know the relative preventive measures, it is free for you to leave a message below or send an e-mail to khkpcn@hotmail.com.
