Renal osteopathy, a common complication of Chronic Renal Failure, brings a
great deal of injury to the patients.
Symptoms of renal osteopathy
Bone pain and fracture. The pain usually occurs in lower back, knees and
lower limbs. The lower back pain may be attributable to vertebral body collapse.
In most cases, the fracture occurs in rib.
Joint aches and arthritis - usually occur in knee-joint usually along with
burning, swelling etc.
Calcification. As the blood vessels have extensive calcification, ischemic
necrosis and skin ulcer usually occur in finger, toe, thigh and arm.
Bone deformity and growth retardation. For the children with Chronic Renal
Failure, they are at developmental stage. Bone deformity can retardate their
growth and development.
How to deal with renal osteopathy in Chronic Renal Failure?
1. Control the intake of foods high in phosphorus and avoid the foods rich in
phosphorus such as animal organs, banana, oranges etc.
2. Keep normal calcium level in blood
Take some oral calcium. This can improve the transportation of calcium in
blood.
3. Vitamin D 3
For the patients on dialysis, when they do not present symptoms of renal
osteopathy, they should take some vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 can promote the
absorption of phosphorus by intestinal tract thus lowering its level in
blood.
4. If the product of serum blood value and phosphorus value is above 70 and
the hyperphosphatemia and parathyroid hormone level increases, the patients can
consider parathyroid surgery.
