What does It Mean If I Have Low Creatinine Levels
Creatinine is a breakdown product of creatine, which is an important part of muscle. It is usually excreted (removed) from the body entirely by the kidneys. If the kidneys start to become diseased, the serum creatinine level will rise.
The typical reference ranges are 0.5 to 1.0 mg/dL (about 45-90 μmol/l) for women and 0.7 to 1.2 mg/dL (60-110 μmol/l) for men.
Having a low level of creatinine indicate nothing more than an efficient and effective pair of kidneys.
A creatinine clearance test is used to help evaluate the rate and efficiency of kidney filtration by collecting all the urine passed over a period of 24 hours and then to compare the amount of creatinine in the blood to the level in the blood stream. It is used to help detect and diagnosed kidney dysfunction.
In normally functioning kidneys, the level of creatinine in the urine compared to the blood should be high as it is being passed out efficiently.
Conversely, if the level in the urine is low, with a high blood creatinine level, this in an indication of a problem, for which a consultant physician is usually involved.
